School Travel Policy

4th May 2023

The Eco-school have been working incredibly hard this year. With the help of Sustrans, we are trying to promote and encourage the pupils of Derrychrin to actively travel to and from school, as we believe there is a direct link between active travel, academic achievement and overall personal development. Below you will see the new School travel policy which details how the Eco-school team will encourage their peers to actively travel to or from school.

If you have any questions relating to the School Travel Policy please do not hesitate to contact Miss Moran or any of the Eco- Team.

School Travel Policy

Derrychrin PS is a school committed to high quality educational   opportunities for each pupil to develop his/her unique talents to the full in a secure, caring environment

Rationale:

The aim of this travel policy is to promote active travel to and from school by all pupils since we believe that there is a direct link between active travel, academic achievement and overall personal development.

Aims:

  • To promote and encourage all children who live locally to active travel to school where possible.
  • To encourage parents to join in with the active travel when dropping off/ picking up their children.
  • To inform the children of the benefits that active travel has on their physical, emotional and social health.
  • To update and provide adequate bike/scooter storage for those children cycling and scooting to school.

Implementation:

  • Children and Parents to be made aware of the safe travel routes around the school.
  • Through social media outlets and school newsletter provide adequate information about the benefit’s active travel has on the children.
  • Working with the ECO-Council to help encourage their classmates to walk, cycle or scoot to school.
  • Help from Sustrans NI when organising associated days to promote active travel, e.g., Ditch the Dark and The Big Walk and Wheel.

Promoting active travel

Every effort is made to ensure that our pupils will receive an excellent education – where they are provided with high quality teaching and learning every day in a safe, stimulating, secure environment.

Pupils are actively encouraged to active travel to and from school.

Targets set for classes to have the most children actively travelling to school are set and rewards for the highest class/ year group.

Monitoring and Evaluation.

The effectiveness of the school travel policy will be monitored and reviewed on a regular basis. The evaluation will be based on the following evidence:

Number of bikes/scooters in the storage unit.

The class teachers will monitor the number of children walking, cycling or scooting in their class each term.

The school council will conduct various surveys asking the children who actively travelled to school each half term.
