Developing Our Outdoor Play Area – How You Can Help

 Dear Parents/Carers,

At Derrychrin Primary School, we are always looking for ways to enhance outdoor learning and play opportunities for our children. Outdoor play is a vital part of children’s physical development, creativity, social skills and wellbeing, and we would love to further develop our existing space to make it even more engaging and purposeful.

Outdoor play is a vital part of children’s physical development, creativity, social skills and overall wellbeing. It also provides rich opportunities for learning across many curriculum areas. We are keen to make our outdoor space more engaging, purposeful and accessible in all weathers.

As part of our proposed plans, we intend to relocate the existing canopy currently situated in the P1/P2 playground to the grassed outdoor learning area at the front of the school. Beneath the canopy, we hope to install artificial grass to create a durable, all‑weather surface that will help preserve and protect existing resources and play equipment. The surrounding area will retain its natural grass, ensuring children continue to benefit from varied outdoor play experiences. This approach will provide a permanent sheltered space where children can learn and play outdoors throughout the year, regardless of the weather. Photographs and visual mock‑ups have been included to help illustrate our proposed vision for this area.

Due to ongoing school budget constraints, we are seeking the support of parents, guardians and family members who may be able to assist us. In particular, we would welcome help from anyone involved in the construction or building trades, or those who could offer advice, practical assistance, or materials to help develop this space safely and sustainably.

If any members of our school community have experience in this area and would be willing to help, please let us know — your support would be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Ciaran McElroy

Principal
